Review: Cinderella Pantomime in Bournemouth

We were invited to review Cinderella, this years pantomime at the Bournemouth Pavilion and once again we had a lovely time.  The fabulous Rhydian (X-Factor) as Prince Charming and a grown up Dani Harmer (Tracy Beaker) as Cinderella were a pleasure to watch. We were pleased to see the return of Noel Brodie as Buttons and his comic timing had the audience and the little helpers giggling away.

The talented Gary Jordan played Dandini and Melanie Walters (the lovely Gwen from Gavin and Stacey...would you like an omelette?) was delightful as the Fairy Godmother.

The children loved the crowd participation and booed and cheered when prompted, and found the ugly sisters (David Ball and Michael Chance) hilarious! They must be exhausted after so many costume changes!! Bringing back some of the funny scenes from previous years always delights the children as they know what to expect. This year they invited daddy and he said it was the best panto he had seen and hopes to return next year...believe us when we say that is a huge compliment!

Review - Hape Space City

Hape Space City

Hape Quadrilla is a High Quality Wooden Marble Run Construction System. It provides endless creative building possibilities and encourages spatial think and problem solving. This 176-piece set includes marbles and glow in the dark accents for galactic racing. Each of the different colour blocks has a different function and it’s the world’s only kinetic marble run.

Inside the box:

The box contains 176 pieces and an instruction booklet with several different options to build, our 10yr old reviewer could easily follow the instructions and build the sets.

The sets do require some problem solving from the children as they build them, the blocks need to be placed in the correct position for the marbles to run through. Both the 7yr old and older child were keen to work together to solve this and we were pleasantly surprised that they didn't get frustrated but this element seemed to hold their attention.

Once the set was built they got to work racing their marbles and they really enjoyed playing together, the cat also seemed to find the experience very entertaining and sat and watched the marbles for ages which the children found hilarious!

When the girls decided to build a different design they added all the glow in the dark stickers which they placed carefully onto the pieces. When it became dark the turned off the lights and using the glow in the dark marbles which they loved. our photo wasn't great but this one shows how great the set looks in the dark.

The set states it's recommended for ages 6-12 years and we think this is a good guide. It's well built and will last a long time, we love wooden toys and this one has something different about it that captures the attention of the children. As with every other Hape Quadrilla Marble Run Construction Set, it combines easily with other Hape Quadrilla products for easy expansion and unique combinations that will enhance your child's play experience.

Review - The Owl Who Lost Its Twoo

 

The Owl Who Lost Its Twoo

 



We have been asked to review the children's book 'The Owl Who Lost Its Twoo' written and illustrated by former primary and special school teacher Suzie Allkins. Suzie is also a mum to two children and lives in Dorset.

Ollie the owl may have a tiny beak but he is very noisy and disturbs the fox, mouse and bat in the moonlit wood. The wise old wizard owl puts a spell on Ollie to help him become less noisy but the spells goes wrong and Ollie loses his Twoo! Poor Ollie is only able to shout 'Twit' and the creatures in the wood think he is being unkind, this upsets Ollie and he hides away quietly.

The fox, mouse and bat ask the wizard owl for help and he finds Ollie and offers to put the spell right if Ollie promises to speak more quietly. The wise owl gets the spell right this time and Ollie has learnt his lesson not to yell and to think about the words he says as they can hurt too. Ollie the owl still enjoys a loud Twit Twoo when no one else is around!

We found this to be a delightful book with a lovely story which reminds children to talk nicely to each other. The story includes rhyming text and repetition which make it interesting to read and listen to and the pictures are beautiful giving a fondness to the main character. All the children who have listened to the story have sat still until the end and wanted to go back and look at the pictures. It has become a popular choice for bedtime reading alongside some of our other favourites.

We were sent some SafeSips to try and we have found them really useful. We have lots of picnic style beakers without handles and our youngest child manages to spill her drinks regularly, especially as she likes to use a straw and for some reason tips the cup as she drinks. We tried out Nutty Putty on a wet weekend and our young testers decided to make their own Club Penguin models completely on their own. We used a 6 colour set.

 

The girls were quite keen to get started and as there were two of them we decided to use the glass chopping boards from the kitchen to work on, but the set does include a playmat for this purpose.

 

The Nutty Putty is easy to work with and a lot less messy and crumbly than the homemade dough we usually play with.

 

 

There are some tools with the set but we also used some of our own tools so both girls could make their own models.

 

The girls were keen to follow the simple instruction sheet and did so without any adult help. They started off with a butterfly each and then spotted the penguin, this gave them the Club Penguin idea and they went on to make some puffles too!

 

We were surprised that we had no mess to clear away at all, this would encourage me to use the product again, sometimes the thought of the mess puts us off getting out this sort of activity so this is a big bonus!

 

One of the finished penguins! The girls went on to make more models, we did use up all of the Nutty Putty in one afternoon but they had lots of fun making the models. It was a no mess easy activity and one we would do again but we would give them a set each so they didn't have to share the colours and instructions.

 

We decided to bake the models following the instructions for 10 minutes and once cool they went on to play a game for the rest of the day with them. The Nutty Putty becomes rubbery when baked and the models held together despite being thrown around and played with.

Review - Moochies Phone for Kids and Win!

We are testing out the new Moochies phone for kids. The phone uses a pay-a-you-go sim card and is worn just like a watch and allows parents to keep track of their children using the Moochies app.

Many parents dread when their child asks if they can walk to school or the park on their own for the first time or that moment in a busy theme park when you lose site of your child. Although we will always worry about the obvious risks we have come across a new product which is extremely useful in lots of these situations. You can contact your child wherever they are and they can also contact you.

Moochies are simple for a child to use, the two buttons on the side of the phone are pre-set with phone numbers set by the parent or guardian using the Moochies app. To phone the parent the child just holds down one of the buttons on the phone.  There is also a SOS button at the front of the watch which the child can press if they are in trouble. This sends a 15 second recording of noises straight to the parents phone.

Using the app the parent can set up safe zones for example visiting a friend's house, and they will be notified if the child strays from this area. Parents can also add the numbers of other contacts who are able to call the phone, these are the only numbers able to call avoiding unwanted calls from strangers.

 

 

We are really impressed with the phone, it's easy for a child to use and because it looks and works as a watch the children are happy to wear it. As well as the designs above there are two new designs in both black and blue which an older child could easily wear. It gives great peace of mind watching the profile of your child moving around the area which has been pre-set as 'safe zone' and at the same time the child feels at ease knowing they can call if they are worried.

What we really liked about this product is how easy to is for the child to use and that it comes without the added risks that a mobile phone comes with. We think it really stands out as a must have phone for children in their 'tween' years. For 9-12 yr olds starting to ask for a bit more independence, going for their first sleepover to taking public transport to secondary school this phone could be very reassuring to all parties.

Review - Trolley Bags

On reading the instructions we noted that heavier items should be placed in the smaller bags so lifting the bags out of the trolley would be easier to handle. Off we went with the bags and a shopping list..

 

The bags all fit together snugly and are easy to pop in the back of the car and onto the back of the trolley. We are testing the deeper bags which are ideal for a big family shop and for using the deeper trolley.

 

We did our shop as usual and placed our items on the conveyer belt. When it was our turn to pack we placed the bags onto the trolley, they rested on the sides of the trolley perfectly and spread across to the end leaving us with four opened bags.

 

 

 

 Having the bags open and ready to place items in is a big difference from using the normal reusable supermarket bags that collapse in the trolley and made packing the bags much faster.

 

We packed the heavier items in the yellow and blue bags at the end of the trolley and used the larger bags for bulkier lighter items like bread and toilet rolls.

 

 

 

We had a lot of admiring comments from the checkout operator and several other shoppers who were impressed at how quickly the bags opened and stayed in place. We left the shop and headed to the car for what we considered to be the ultimate test. Would we be able to lift the deep bags out of the trolley and into the boot of the car without hurting our backs? The bags have a netting at the bottom of them so we also questioned if they would be able to hold the weight of the heavier items.

 

 

 

As you can see, the bags fitted into the car boot well and the netting was strong enough to hold the heavy milk bottles and tins. They were manageable to lift although I wouldn't feel comfortable over packing the bags they are able to hold a weekly shop for a family of 6.

 

We were so impressed that these stay in the car boot now so we have them with us for future shops !

Thunderbirds 1 to the rescue! Our latest toy review is for the TB1 vehicle which is 10.5cm long. It's just the right size to fit in a child's hand and also fits inside the Tracy Island Playset which can be bought separately. The vehicle was easy to remove from the packaging.  

TB1 has retractable wings and our reviewer found the base easy to turn which activated the wings.

 

This vehicle comes complete with action and rescue sounds and this is what stood out for our reviewer, she counted five different sounds and phrases and pressed the button to hear them as she played with the toy.

 

Our reviewer played with the toy for around 30 minutes before asking to put it away. She didn't sit down to play for long and took the toy with her to fly around the house and garden making her own sounds. She did say that she would like to play with the island too as she spotted it on the back of the TB1 packaging! 

 

 

The toy is easy to tidy away and doesn't take up too much room in a box alongside other vehicles. We recommend this toy for a child from 3 years to around 8 years.

Review - Grease at Bournemouth Pavilion

 

Talented local company BBLOC present the blockbuster smash hit Grease this summer at Bournemouth Pavilion.

We went to see this show on it's opening night, it's the third time I have seen the stage show but it was first time for my 17yr old daughter who is also a Grease fan and loves the movie.
I had previously explained to her that this is an amateur production as stated on the Pavilion website.

Everyone who loves Grease the movie will already be familiar with the hit songs from this show and the cast carried them off brilliantly. We were surprised to find Paul from the popular shoe shop Mathews in Christchurch playing Kenickie and a fabulous job he did too!

Rizzo, Danny and Sandy were just a few of the other characters with outstanding voices and very realistic to the movie, although the whole cast were amazing.
We were very impressed with the dance routines, singing and quality of the acting and this certainly did not come across as an amateur performance.

Brilliant set designs although a little slow to change at times, they were worth the wait.
The first night was dress up night and there were lots of pink ladies in the audience which added to the atmosphere.

We recommend this summer sizzler which will appeal to every Grease fan young and old.

The show is on at Bournemouth Pavilion from 21 – 25 July 2015, under 14's must be accompanied by an adult.

Review - JCB Kids- JS330 Tracked Excavator 1:32nd scale

 

We have been sent a JCB Kids- JS330 Tracked Excavator 1:32nd scale to review. The product states that it's suitable from ages 3 and up, our reviewer is a 5yr old.

The JCB comes in a well packaged box and is a realistic but sturdy design, we opened the box to play at home but instantly found the tracks hard to push along carpet and the child felt the need to remove the tracks to be able to push along the floor. It does move slightly better on hard floor. The arm is a little stiff to move.

We are very close to a beach in Dorset so we decided to take the toy to try it out on sand, we found this suited the tracks much better and the child became much more interested which makes perfect sense really!

 

We would recommend this toy for ages 3-8 for use in the garden, playing with sand or dirt and even to take to the beach for a change from the traditional bucket and spade. We tested this toy on both a girl and boy, both children like to play with cars and other vehicles. In this case the girl lost interest very quickly but the boy played happily for several hours.

Review - Grandma’s Poetry Book ~ by Di Castle

Grandma’s Poetry Book charts the nostalgic journey from birth to teens as seen through the eyes of a grandmother.  It captures the many facets of those fleeting, easily forgotten moments as the grandchildren grow. Touching and funny in turn, the poems resonate with a grandmother’s love for her grandchildren.

Inspired by A A Milne and the bouncy verse of Pam Ayres, Grandma’s Poetry Book was inspired by the birth of Di Castle’s first grandchild. It has been illustrated by Denise Horn – whose sketches capture the special bond between grandparents and their families.

We think this a lovely collection of poems and illustrations which really do touch the reader, and one you can pick up at any time and it makes you smile. As the book takes us on a journey from tots to teens it would make a lovely gift for a new grandparent but we can imagine the knowing nod of the head from a more seasoned gran!

With four children in the house anything that makes life easier is a bonus. I must admit i dread the annual school uniform changeover, buying it is one thing but sewing name labels into everything is both time consuming and tedious. The older children certainly don't like sewn labels into their clothes as apparently it isn't 'cool' at senior school and college! I tend to use a pen on the label for them but it never lasts and after a few washes i have to re-apply.

 

We were sent two stamps and a ink pad to test  and we started with the lunchboxes, we have the fabric style which can be put in the washing machine, usually we remove the paper insert with the handwritten name but we stamped the lunchboxes with the girls names and threw the old paper inserts away, now they look much neater and the name stays put after washing. So many children have the same design on their lunchboxes so these stamps make them easier for the girls to find.

 

Stamping the summer uniform was much quicker and again the names stayed put after several washes, everything we bought for summer is now labelled and i must admit to feeling rather smug that the job is complete!

 

We really did find a unexpected use for these stamps which has saved me lots of arguments. Our younger children share a bedroom, as they are both girls and similar in age their toys tend to be the same or slightly different which causes no end of rows when one of them loses something and then claims the remaining toy. So i took the stamps into the bedroom and stamped the labels on the bears, dolls clothes, stationery, cushions and anything thing else that they may fight over. Now, when one of them loses something, we know which one has lost it, brilliant!

 

We recommend these to busy parents, and also to those less busy, use the extra time to sit back, relax and give yourself a pat on the back at how organised you are.

Review - Robin Hood. Poole, Lighthouse

CBBC’s Ed Petrie takes on the role of Robin, Ed is joined by Tom Bright as Friar Tuck, who also writes and directs the Lighthouse panto for the third year running. Tom is one of the country’s top pantomime directors and is responsible for writing and performing the song for popular 1970s children’s television series Tiswas.  He has appeared on TV in a number of comedy series alongside the likes of Mike Reid and Russ Abbot. The role of the dastardly Sheriff of Nottingham is played by Patrick O’Kane (Game of Thrones, The Borgias, Jamaica Inn) .Back by popular demand are Lighthouse favourites Neil Smye and Dan Looney, whose comic timing and ability to get audiences crying with laughter has become synonymous with the Poole panto.  Local actresses Stephanie Walker and Alicia Woodhouse take on the parts of the Woodland Fairy and Maid Marion respectively. 

Non-stop thrills and spills are the order of the day as Robin takes on his arch-rival the Sheriff of Nottingham and still finds time to catch the eye of the beautiful Maid Marion in this classic tale.

We went to see this panto last night and really enjoyed it, Tom Bright was very funny as Friar Tuck and he got the most giggles from the children but also provided lots of jokes and comedy for the adults. Lots of hissing and booing at the grumpy Sherriff and we loved the fun pairing of Bill and Ben. The show keep us entertained from start to finish with lots of slapstick comedy, audience participation and brilliant dancing, the dancers were exceptional and we found it hard to take our eyes off the little girl who played Jill, such a little star!  Fabulous fun show for all the family.

We were very excited to receive this lovely colourful gift set through the post. There are two sets to choose from each with a different design, moth and zebra.

 

The set contains the wellies, 3 marker pens and a colouring book, all packaged in a lovely box.

 

 

This set was reviewed by an 8yr old girl, she is very creative and loves to colour and draw and really liked the idea of the colouring book in the box. The pictures on the wellies and the book have lots of detail and although she had hoped there would be more colours to choose from she soon got to work and began to colour in. I think the 3 colours look quite effective.

 

The 5yr old decided to colour in some of the pictures in the book with the pens but the marker pens went through the card so these may be best kept just for the wellies. Both girls were keen to colour in some of the animal pictures.

 

 

 



When both wellies were completed the 8yr old was very proud of her creation and put on the wellies to show everyone. She said she really liked the set and loved the idea that there wouldn't be anyone else with wellies just like these.

Review - Carddies, the Card People to Colour and Go

 

Carddies - lots of fun in a small box!

 

We were given the opportunity to review a set of Carddies, the card people to colour and go, and we chose the school set.

 

When the set arrived my 5 and 8yr old daughters were keen to see inside. 

The set contains everything to keep a child occupied and is well thought out, I showed them what the stands were used for and off they went, needing no more input from me.

 

 

 

 Both girls love to colour but I did think this may interest the younger child more, however I was pleasantly surprised to find the set held the attention of both of them for almost two hours!

 

Reluctantly the girls had to pack away as it was time for homework but they were able to put the pieces back in the box with ease.

 

We asked the 8yr old what she thought and she asked for some more for Christmas! We think the sets would make a great stocking filler or something fun to slip in the bag on a long journey.
